Lead Hackamore

I make this hackamore in Rawhide or Latigo, or in a
Rawhide and Latigo combination. The headstall goes
over the front to reduce bulk under the bridle, and the
throat-latch runs down under the jaw, to the lead shank.
I usually braid 8 or 12 thongs, over a 1/2 inch twisted
rawhide core, with a 32 strand nose button. The sides
are 5/8 inch thick, the nose button tapers from 1 1/8
inch in the center to 3/4 inch at the end.

Few horses will pull back on this type of hackamore.

JUST ABOUT THE BEST HALTER YOU CAN
USE

Riding Hackamore

Headstall is 8 strand Black leather, with a 12  strand
3/4 inch Rawhide Bosal and a 5/8 mohair Mecate.

A good Hackamore, for general riding.

Bosals

I use the finest of Rawhide and Latigo in making my Bosals and they are
all braided over a Twisted or Braided Rawhide core.  The nose button is
larger in the center and tapers toward the ends. A small knot just past
the nose button holds the headstall from sliding down the Bosal. The
heal knot is usually in a sequence of over 3 thongs and under 3 and
gives the Bosal balance.

The Bosal below has a 8 string braided rawhide core, the cover is 12
strand Kangaroo, the nose button and heel knot have a interweave of
black Kangaroo

Braided Bridle

This headstall is fully adjustable, and can be used on
any size horse.
It is braided in black leather in six and
eight strand, over a nylon core and has a brown
inter-weave in the knots. The reins are eight strand
with weighted knots to give them balance. The Romal
is twelve strand with eight weighted knots and has a
two tone braid on the popper. The knots on the end of
the braids are in the design of a Star.

It took me roughly 145 hours to braid this bridle.

quirt 1.jpg (41442 bytes)

Quirt's

I braid my Quirt's over a core of buckshot, to give them weight
and balance, in either leather or rawhide. The two pictured
are of braided leather, both are done in  sixteen strand braiding.
Usually braided 16 inches long, with a 14 inch lash.

Close up of honda
honda.jpg (251399 bytes)

Rawhide Reata

The Reata pictured is a 4 strand 75 footer. A Rawhide
Reata is often thrown over 40 ft. Unlike nylon ropes
that are often tied to the horn, Reata's are dallied &
allowed slip on the horn until the animal roped comes
to a stop.

It took  about 30 hours to make the Reata shown &
5 hours to make the honda.

Rawhide Reata

The first  40 ft of the Reata pictured is 8 strand  the last  45 ft is 4 strand making this Reata a  85 foot Half & Half.

A competent braider can braid about 2 feet  of 4 strand
Reata per hour,  half & half's take even longer to make.
When you conceder the time involved  in the preparation
of the rawhide, cutting the strings  & the time needed to
do the braiding, you will have an idea of how evolved
the making of a Reata is.

Close up of braided honda

You will see the transition from 4 to 8 strand braiding
 in the photo below

I  braid 4 strand,  6 strand,  8 strand and  half & half Reata's,
in lengths of sixty or more ft.
The first half of a  half & half
is braided in  4 strand braid the rest is in 8 strand braiding.

A half & half  Reata is very rare and is very valued by collectors.

whip 7.jpg (60512 bytes)

Bull Whip

I braid my whips over a core of buckshot to give weight,
and balance. All my whips are made from one continuous
piece of leather,  starting at the tip and running up to the
handle. Starting with four tapered strands then splitting
those four, one-third of the way up the whip, to make
eight strands at the top. If  the whip is longer than ten
feet, those eight strands are again split to form sixteen
strands, that will then finish at the handle. I then braid
in a bolster of a second color down from the handle to
ad a little stiffing. The  swivel is extended from the core
and braided over to form the finished handle. With the
proper maintenance these Whips will give a lifetime
of service.

Plated Hobbles

Eight plait hobbles, with the  North Star Knot used on the
end of the leg straps.

Braided Honda

I start this honda in 8 strand braid then combine the
braiding at the base into 16 strand at the point that
goes around the Reata

braidedhonda.jpg (107331 bytes)

Loop style Hondas

In this style I braid  four strands over
a triple folded flat loop.

Romal reins

I made these reins using a  5/8th inch wide flat
strap, with black knots and a  inter-weave of
tan Kangaroo. The bit loops are held in place
with a braided knot.
